2016 $25,000 Challenge

Help Us Close the Asheville Achievement Gap

Only 26% of Black Asheville City Schools 3rd grade students pass end-of-grade reading proficiency tests

68% of Black Asheville City Schools 3rd grade students who have completed 2 years of R2S intervention pass end-of-grade reading proficiency tests.

Why?

Asheville's City Schools, in a college town, have the largest achievement gap in the State of North Carolina. The reasons are complicated but one solution is simple.

Read To Succeed's early intervention with one-on-one, multi-sensory, phonics-based tutoring gets results.

We help students learn to read.

BUT: Our waiting lists for each school continue to grow and the Achievement Gap shows little sign of narrowing. Help us Close The Gap.

Our overhead is very low  - 95% of our budget covers training costs, tutoring materials and family outreach.
Last year your generosity allowed us to
  • Hire our first full-time employee, Julie Thomas, our Program and Training Director.
  • Expand our library of multicultural children's books to almost 500 volumes
  • Provide 2 Parent Outreach events, promoting home literacy and good parenting skills
          Thank you!
This year we are challenged to:
  • Hire an administrative assistant to replace our wonderful full-time VISTA. Our VISTA worker has been provided through partnership with Asheville City Schools Foundation, but that program will be eliminated in 2017-18.
  • Reduce the R2S student waiting lists at every school. We could easily double our volunteer staff (currently at about 125) and still not meet the need.
  • Provide trained volunteers to Buncombe County Schools. This fall 8 trained coaches began work in Johnston Elementary School, which serves Asheville's Deaverview Community. We look forward to adding more schools to the R2S network.

Sponsor a Team

Many supporters like the personal connection when they sponsor a coach/student team.  Sponsors receive a photo of the coach and student and handwritten notes from both. Periodic status reports (beginning, middle and end of year) keep sponsors abreast of the student's progress throughout the school year.
