August at R2S: Big Events, Big Community Love!

Summer may be winding down, but at Read 2 Succeed (R2S), we’re just getting started! This August, we’re bringing the joy of reading, learning, and connection to our communities through a lineup of events that celebrate youth, families, books—and the power of coming together.

​Whether you’re gearing up for the school year or just looking for a fun afternoon, there’s something for everyone on our August calendar. Mark your dates and come say hi!

August 5: Johnston Elementary Summer Celebration
We're kicking off the month by celebrating summer with families across our community! Expect books, smiles, and lots of encouragement to keep those literacy muscles flexing before school begins.
Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

August 6: Asheville City Schools Community Partner Expo
We’re proud to be a community partner! Come visit us to learn how R2S supports young readers across Asheville and receive books as well as more fun!
Time: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM

August 9: Tanger Outlets Back to School Bash
We’ll be out in the community all day! Come grab books, share your favorite book titles, and celebrate the magic of reading with us.

August 9: National Book Lover’s Day
Come join us at R2S to distribute books, staff games, and share reading resources with RAD Brewing Co. and Literacy Together.

August 13: R2S Tutor Training Kicks Off
Calling all future reading champions! If you’ve been thinking about becoming a volunteer, now’s your chance. Our August training series is the perfect way to get started. Let’s build brighter futures—together.
Dates/Times: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Zoom (Every Wednesday: Aug. 13, 20, 27)

August 15: Back to School Bash with Claxton Elementary & HACA
We love teaming up with Claxton and HACA to make heading back to school something to celebrate! Join us for literacy games, giveaways, and all the good vibes kids need to kick off the year strong.
Time: 4:30 PM – 6:30 PM

August 16: BCPL Summer Library Festival
Books, crafts, and community fun? Yes, please! We’ll be hanging out with the Buncombe County Public Libraries crew to celebrate summer reading and share tips for keeping kids excited about books all year long.

August 22: United 4 Youth Block Party
Wrap up the month with us in the heart of downtown! The United 4 Youth Block Party is a joyful celebration of young people, with live music, fun activities, and of course, lots of literacy love from R2S.
Time: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM 
Location: Pack Square Park (Downtown Asheville)
