Want to change a life? Our trained reading coaches work with Asheville elementary school students from low-literacy households.
Each student's goal is to read at grade level by the end of third grade. By the end of the 2011-2012 school year, almost 3/4 of R2S-coached students were reading at grade level. |
You're at the right placeTwice each year R2S trains a select group of motivated volunteers to help children in K through 3rd grades learn to read.
After four weeks of intense training, each coach is matched with a student. They meet twice weekly during the school day, working on handwriting, reading and spelling, using a phonics-based, multi-sensory approach. |
Why is this important? Most children from low literacy homes are already behind when they begin school.
They are below grade level when they enter kindergarten. Students who fail to read at grade level by third grade are 4X more likely to drop out than students who can read. |
R2S has a solutionReducing the rate of dropouts means adults who are more likely to be employed and productive instead of subsisting on welfare or in prison.
Literacy is powerful. It can break the cycle of poverty and open the door to economic and social stability. Interested in changing a life? Click here to learn more. |
