Position Summary

Direct supervisor with Co-ED to Early Literacy Director & Elementary Literacy Director
At R2S, we believe that diversity and inclusion amongst our staff are critical to the success of providing community-powered and culturally responsive services. We seek to recruit, develop, and retain the most talented people from a diverse candidate pool.
The Board of Directors of R2S is seeking a Co-Executive Director (ED) who is a leader committed to improving our community through positive influence. The ideal candidate is an educator in early childhood/elementary education with at least three years of nonprofit management and/or business development skills.
This Co-ED will provide leadership to the organization, manage its day-to-day affairs, and is responsible for directing and formulating plans for achieving the organization’s mission and annual goals, including providing strategic oversight for the R2S elementary tutoring, early childhood, and family/community engagement programs. The Co-ED will serve as a representative in Asheville and Buncombe County, strengthening existing relationships with schools, community partners, funders/donors, and supporters and building new relationships.
This Co-ED will work in partnership with R2S’s existing Co-ED, who primarily oversees operations (fundraising, development, staffing, IT) and comms/marketing.
This Co-ED will make it a priority to preserve and build upon the collaborative spirit that exists internally with the board and staff and externally with the broader nonprofit community, government officials, and other key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
- Strategic planning and visioning for the organization.
- Serves as organization spokesperson, supports public relations and marketing, and plans and attends R2S events and networking efforts.
- Supports advocacy efforts, acting as a liaison with partner organizations to nurture and expand the organization’s key external relationships.
- Develops, manages and provides oversight to continue to grow R2S early childhood, elementary tutoring, and family/engagement literacy programs to produce measurable and quantifiable outcomes in our community.
- Oversees data collection, analysis, and evaluation of programs.
- Provides education and literacy expertise to R2S programming and outreach.
- Provides education legislative monitoring and advice, literacy instruction best practices, curriculum planning, and standards alignment.
- Supports management and training of R2S staff, contractors, and volunteers in partnership with Co-ED and Program Directors.
- Supports organizational fundraising efforts in partnership with the Co-ED, board, and committees.
- Creates budget, financial forecasting, grant oversight/reporting, and donor development in partnership with Co-ED.
- Attends board meetings and provides advice, counsel, and support to the Board of Directors to ensure an engaged, powerful board.
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
Qualifications & Experience
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
- Culturally-responsive, anti-racist, and asset-based education, coursework, and training.
- Developing oversight and programs that deliver high-quality, tailored, and equitable services.
- Implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies for an organization.
- Relationship building with stakeholders and collaboration with other community agencies.
- Ability to communicate effectively with children, families, community members, board and staff.
- Creative problem-solving and decision-making.
- Cross-department project management experience, i.e., managing projects involving members of different programs/teams.
- Detailed documentation and record-keeping.
- Efficient with basic computer operating systems and software.
- Familiarity with Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.), Zoom, and Google Meet and/or willing to explore and adopt innovative technology solutions.

- (Capacity Building) Day-to-day duties - strengthening volunteer program through resource building, supporting volunteer recruitment and retention, creating and growing existing systems for tracking/supporting volunteers, managing office coordination tasks, overseeing book/family reading resource distribution networks, etc.
- (Capacity Building) Communications - increasing awareness and engagement with R2S brand, generating family reading content for the R2S website and blog, distributing outreach materials for family literacy events, supporting R2S eMarketing and social media presence, and engaging with our education and community partners.
- (Direct Service) Training/tutor support - actively supporting tutors, students, and families R2S engages at literacy events, workshops, and trainings. Providing literacy tutoring to students enrolled in the K-3 tutoring program.

Programming:
- Manage a classroom of 12 - 24 Kindergarten/1st, 2nd, or 3rd/4th grade students with the help of an assistant teacher and after-school staff
- Prepare lesson plans and implement curricula to teach language and literacy skills, learning, logic, and reasoning skills in collaboration with R2S staff.
- Teach foundational literacy skills (i.e., phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, etc. using Fundations phonics curricula and Heggerty phonemic awareness curricula
- Assist R2S staff with student progress monitoring and data collection and analysis
- Report on classroom activities, focus skills, and student successes
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, Child Development, or related field. (Student teachers and those pursuing teacher certification are welcome to apply.)
- Experience using Fundations phonics curriculum
- Experience using Heggerty or similar phonemic awareness curriculum
- Experience working with students and families who identify as BIPOC
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of culturally-responsive teaching strategies
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities
