Our Vision

We envision an equitable world where all children are strong, confident readers who succeed in school and in life.

Our Mission

Read to Succeed’s mission is to close the race-based opportunity gap through community-powered literacy programming that engages children, families, and community partners.

Our Core Values

Family & Community Partnerships
We strengthen our community impact by actively listening and engaging in authentic, intentional conversations. We believe in cultivating relationships, building diverse and inclusive coalitions, and respecting a child’s and family’s agency. We advocate for literacy through creative and effective collaboration with family and community partners.
Literacy
Literacy is critical to educational and life success, and we know learning begins at birth. We value the essential role families play as children’s first teachers in supporting them in learning to read and being prepared for school. We are deeply committed to closing the race-based literacy gap through collaboration among families, schools, and community partners.
Education Equity
We actively examine our role in perpetuating an inequitable system designed to oppress communities of color. We work to align our organizational policies, practices, structures, and resources toward a shared goal of educational equity, and we actively participate in community conversations and programs that ensure all children an equal chance for success.
Diversity & Inclusion
We involve the communities we serve and respect and reflect their diverse backgrounds. We know including diverse points of view makes our organization stronger and more sustainable. We value our differences and take advantage of them. We operate with awareness and intention.
Lifelong Learning
We never stop learning. We embrace progress and innovation in order to grow and continuously improve. We remain curious, we learn from our successes and failures, and we support each other in our lifelong pursuit of knowledge. We are committed to the continuing education of our staff, board, and volunteers, both organization-wide and self-directed, regarding institutional racism and its impact on the communities with whom we work.
Achieve Impact
We value research and evidence-based methods of literacy intervention that affect meaningful outcomes for children of color. We make data-informed decisions and evaluate our programming to ensure our work meets the high standard we set for achieving long-term success.
Culturally-Responsive
We value representation across all mediums. The books and learning materials we use in our literacy programming feature culturally-responsive content that affirms and celebrates diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and identities.
Staff & Volunteers
We value dedicated, skilled staff and highly trained volunteers. We challenge, support, and inspire one another. We work together toward a shared mission and respect each person’s contribution toward achieving that mission.
Courage, Trust, Humility
We offer and receive trust from the children, family, and community partners with whom we work. We move humbly through our work and evolve our ways of thinking by acknowledging our own limitations and seeking different perspectives. We hold fast to our beliefs and values, even when it feels hard or uncomfortable.
Our Mission

Read to Succeed is on a mission to help close the race-based opportunity gap through community-powered literacy programming that engages children, families, and community partners.
