The Read to Succeed is growing! Our brand new role of Early Literacy Director allows us to dedicate more energy, time, and resources to our early childhood partners supporting children 0-5 with early literacy and kindergarten-readiness skills.

We are thrilled to welcome Maggie Fox to the team – learn a little more about her in the fun Q&A below!

  1. Tell us a little about yourself and your work with young children.
I am an energetic former early childhood and elementary educator with a passion for culturally-responsive teaching and family engagement. I have completed my Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a focus on Early Childhood and English as a Second Language.

My most valuable experience was teaching First grade in an urban school district and being able to differentiate instruction for all students. Besides first grade, I have been a lead toddler teacher and an infant classroom teacher as well.

I have been volunteering and mentoring children through organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters. I love immersing myself in new opportunities and supporting 0-5 early development. I can’t wait to meet more people in my community.

  2. What is your favorite children’s book?
Don’t Touch My Hair! by Sharee Miller. As a child, I loved reading The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn.

  3. Where is your favorite place to read?
    A cozy coffee shop.

  4. What’s the last thing you read, book or otherwise?
Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell.

  5. If you could have one author, dead or alive, over for dinner, who would it be?

Tiffany D. Jackson. She gave me inspiration as a young adult as I was discovering my true self.

  6. Who inspired your love of reading?
My teachers and my aunt Gina. At school, I enjoyed watching book trailers. My aunt Gina and I would spend our weekends reading in Barnes & Noble.

  7. What’s your favorite book-to-movie adaptation?
    Where the Crawdads Sing.

  8. When is the last time you read to someone else?
Last week at the Chosen PODS Afterschool Program at the Arthur R. Edington Center and a PreK classroom at the YWCA.

  9. If you wrote an autobiography, what would it be titled?
    Code-switch.

  10. What is your favorite genre to read?
    Dystopian.

  11. What is one of your favorite things to do in Asheville/favorite aspect of Asheville?
One of my favorite things to do in Asheville is play vintage pinball machines at Asheville Retrocade!
