Calling All R2S Reading Tutor Volunteers

Picture
The evolving situation surrounding the spread of and response to COVID-19 has left many of us feeling helpless. With schools currently closed and children remote learning from home, our Read to Succeed Reading Tutors are also unable to provide the in-person literacy help to students who need it most. That doesn't mean we can't still use the tips, tools, and techniques we learned in training to help others, though!

If you have a smart device or video camera, please consider submitting a Reading Tutor Story Time video that we can share with the wider community. This is just one small way Read to Succeed Asheville/Buncombe can support children and families during these complicated times. Follow the directions below and don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions!

Goal:
Share videos of R2S reading tutors doing live read-alouds of children’s books, implementing the techniques learned in training, including highlighting vocabulary words, finger tracking, asking comprehension questions, and covering sight words.

1. Write a Quick Lesson Plan
  • Title and author of book
  • 3 or 4 vocabulary words to introduce beforehand and highlight during the reading
  • Any grade-level sight words in the reading that might be good to emphasize
  •  4 to 5 Comprehension questions to ask during the reading.

2. Send Your Lesson Plan to Julie "JT" Thomas
Email JT, our Program and Training Director, at [email protected] with your lesson plan, so she can review it, collaborate with you, and provide recommendations.

3. Record Your Video
Record a video with sound, either on a smartphone, tablet, computer w/ webcam, or other recording device. We want viewers to really be able to see the book and the words with your finger tracking, so you may need a friend or family member to help you out!

4. Submit Your Video Recording
Email your video recording to Communications Director, Jess McLean, at [email protected]. (Preferred file types: mp4 or .mov). If your video is too large to upload to an email, please save to a cloud drive (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) and email Jess a link.

We will edit the videos as needed and post on our blog and social media channels, and we will email you a link to the video so you can view and share it too!

I'm interested. I was talking to a County reading specialist who lives on my street about this very thing. Will work on Lesson Plan.
